Frage: How many times you were racing at Sudety MTB
Challenge or Beskidy MTB Trophy?
Die Beskidy MTB
Trophy haben wir erstmals 2013 besucht und sind ihr dann bis 2015 treu
geblieben. Jede Teilnahme war Wetterbedingt komplett anders. 2013 war es eine
Schlammschlacht, 2014 war es eine Mischung aus allen Wetterlagen und 2015 war
die Sonne der ärgste Gegner für die Fahrer.
Die Sudety
werden wir nach derzeitigen Planungen wohl erst 2016 kennen lernen.
We visited the Beskidy MTB Trophy in 2013 for the first time and have
remained true to it up to now. All events differed completely from each other
due to the weather conditions. In 2013, the event was more or less a
mudslinging, whereas in 2014 we had a mixture of all weather conditions. This
year, the sun was the direst opponent of us bikers.
According to our actual planning we will get to know the Sudety in 2016.

Frage: Stage races for many people are the main events
in the season. In Poland we have two of them - Beskidy MTB Trophy and Sudety
MTB Challenge. How you build your shape - you focus on the trainings or you
race (almost) in every weekend?
Wir haben
keinen Trainingsplan und auch keinen wirklichen Plan. Wir fahren die meisten
Rennen nicht als Rennen sondern aus Spaß an der Sache. Natur, nette Leute und
dabei noch neue Gegenden kennen lernen, was gibt es schöneres wenn man diese
Leidenschaft dann auch noch mit seiner Lebensgefährtin teilen kann?
So haben wir
vom Sattel aus dieses Jahr schon Land und Leute in Polen, Tschechien, Slowakei,
Kroatien, Slowenien, Italien, Österreich und Belgien erleben dürfen.
Sehr bekloppt
mag es für einige erscheinen wenn wir erzählen das wir uns die Beskidy Trophy
als Erholung und Belohnung für unser diesjähriges Saisonhighlight, die 24
Stunden Deutschen Meisterschaften MTB 2er Mixed (konnten wir gewinnen), 3 Tage
vor dem Start der Beskidy gegönnt haben.
We neither work according to a training schedule nor do we follow a race
schedule systematically. When we participate in a race, having fun is the
imperative motivation for us. Being outdoor in the nature, meeting nice people,
seeing new landscapes and sharing all of that with each other is our passion.
Riding our bikes, this year we visited already Poland, the Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Austria and Belgium. Three days before the
start of the Beskidy Trophy we won the 24-Hour-German-Championships-Race in the
mixed-category. Therefore, knowing that it might sound somehow crazy to others,
we considered the Beskidy event as a recreation exercise and our personal
gratification for that success.

Frage: How many stage races you are able to do in one
season? What events are in you 2015 calendar?
Dieses Jahr
haben wir nur 2 Etappenrennen im Kalender gehabt, Beskidy Trophy und die
Event-Perle Mad East Challenge 500. Mehr hat der Urlaub dieses Jahr nicht
hergegeben. Dafür haben wir aber ein 14 Stunden Nachtrennen und vier 24-Stunden
MTB Rennen gebucht. So gibt es dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal ein 24 Stunden Rennen
auf und um das Messe und Flughafen-Gelände in Stuttgart.
Besonders freue
ich mich aber auf unser erstes eigenes kleines Vereins Mountainbike Rennen mit
dem Namen Fischteichhölle im Oktober. (www.fischteichhölle.de)
This year we have participated
in two stage races only. One was the Beskidy Trophy, the second one the Mad
East Challenge, which is a real jewel among the race events. Unfortunately, our
limited annual leave does not permit for more. In addition we took part or still
plan to take part in a 14-Hour-Nightride, and four more 24-Hour-MTB-Races. For
example there will be a 24-Hour-Race taking place in the area of the traid fair
and the airport in Stuttgart.
But with a really pleasant
anticipation we are looking forward to the first race, named ‘Fischteichhoelle’
(www.fischteichhoelle.de), which was
initiated and will be performed by our recently founded mountain bike club in
October this year.

Frage: What is the advantage of the stage (multiday)
race vs one day events (marathons, cross country)?
Ganz klar das
„Wir“-Gefühl, die Gemeinschaften die sich auf und neben der Strecke bilden. Für
vielleicht 10% der Fahrer geht es um das Podest für alle anderen um das pure
Abenteuer und sehr oft um den Kampf gegen den inneren Schweinehund und das Time
Out.
For sure it is the
companionship evolving in the course of such a longer event among the racers
and all other participants and supporters. While maybe 10 % of the bikes are aiming
for good results, the majority of people are taking part to simply have fun
and/or to conquer their weaker self.

Frage: One week of racing in the mountains is not a
piece of cake. There are always some moments when you want to give up. How you manage this?
Stell dich auf
der Strecke eines Etappenrennens am 3. Tag mal mit gesenktem Kopf an den
Streckenrand, du wirst erstaunt sein wie viele Fahrer anhalten und dir gut
zusprechen und dich zum weiter fahren motivieren. Bei uns kommt aber noch hinzu
das Moni und ich uns auch sehr gut gegeneinander motivieren. Auch wenn es
abgedroschen klingt, bei uns zählt das finishen mit Spaß mehr wie ein
Podestplatz unter Druck und Schmerzen. Ein Grund warum wir auch keine festen
Werbepartner haben, denn für die meisten zählt am Ende doch nur die
Platzierung.
Just imagine to stand aside
the trail on the third day of a stage race with your head hanging. You will be
surprised about the number of people who will stop, talk to you and encourage
you to continue. Additionally, Moni and myself we are very good in motivating
each other. Even if it sounds hollow, for us it is more important to finish and
have fun instead of heading for a podium place accompanied by pressure, pain,
and stress. For that reason we refuse to have commercial advertising partners as
you will be consequently obliged to finish always with good results.

Frage: It is difficult to handle the stage race as one
person - bike service, loundry, regeneration. What kind of assistance you have
with you?
Für den Bike-Service und den Notfall gibt es bei
vielen Rennen Service-Stationen. Allerdings muss ich sagen das
die Bike-Service-Crew bei der Beskidy Trophy zu den geilsten und coolsten im
Rennzirkus zählt die ich kenne. So habe ich mich 2014 mit einem defekten
Carbon-Rahmen am 2. Tag ins Ziel gekämpft und die Jungs haben mir mit bissel
Holz und Kabelbinder den Rahmen so geil zusammengeflickt das ich nicht nur das
Finischer-Shirt in Empfang nehmen konnte sondern danach mit dem „Holz“-Rahmen
noch viele Rennen gefahren bin.
Alles andere
ist purer Automatismus, ankommen, Essen, Kleidung waschen, Bike pflegen und
danach hoffen die richtige Kneipe zu finden in der auch alle anderen ihr
„Feierabendbier“ trinken.

During
the most of the events one can rely on service stations for bike service and
emergencies. Nevertheless, I really want to say that the service crews in
charge during the Beskidy-Trophy are among the best crews I experienced until
today. In 2014 I crashed my carbon frame on the second day of the race. After
reaching the finish line of the stage, the guys in the service station used
some wood and some cable straps and fixed my frame in such an incredible way,
that I was not only able to finish that race, but following that I could take
part in quite a number of additional races riding on that wood-supported carbon
frame.
Everything
else are simply automatisms for us – arriving, organizing food, washing
clothes, bodies and bikes etc. Of course, finding the right bar to have some
beer with all the others after finishing a stage is definitely of the same
importance.

Frage: Please name three things which you never forget
during packing for the stage race. And please name some not oridinary things
which you take with you.
+ Kettennieter/Kettenschloss,
Kabelbinder (abartig was man alles mit guten Kabelbindern reparieren kann) und
Geld für die vielen schönen Biergärten durch die man bei der Beskidy geführt wird…
- meinen Bauchspeck dank Kuchensucht
+ Chain, chain
link, cable straps (unbelievable what type of problems you can solve with such
straps) and sufficient money to make a stop-over in each of the fabulous beer
gardens one passes by in the course of the Beskidy Trophy.
